A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch. It works as a safety device to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. The basic function of a circuit breaker is to detect a fault condition and immediately discontinue electrical flow. A fuse can only work once and should be replaced by a new fuse. Being different from a fuse, a circuit breaker doesn't need to be replaced frequently and can be manually or automatically reset to resume normal operation. There are various sizes of circuit breakers. Small circuit breakers are used to protect an individual house hold appliance. Large ones are used to protect high voltage circuits feeding a whole city.
Circuit breakers include low voltage circuit breakers, magnetic circuit breakers, thermal magnetic circuit breakers, common trip breakers, medium-voltage circuit breakers and high-voltage circuit breakers.
